5 Days Until Iceland Adventure 2014!
We're flying out on Saturday, October 25th, for our 2 week adventure in Iceland. We've booked a campervan from Happy Campers, and our campervan has a bed, a sink with running water, a small stove, a cooler, and a heating system. We considered renting a car and booking hotels, hostels, and farmhouse rooms, but we decided that it would be cheaper (and more of an adventure!) to rent a campervan.
From everything we've heard or read, Iceland is a fairly expensive country. We'll be stopping in a grocery store in Reykjavik, the country's capital, to fill up on food. We'll most likely only find larger grocery stores in Reykjavik and Akureyri, Iceland's "capital in the north". Reykjavik and Akureyri comprise the majority of Iceland's approximate population of 325,000, the former having around 200,000 in the Capital Region and the latter having around 20,000. The rest of our time will be spent on beautiful open roads with little human interaction...just how we like it. 🙂
Iceland has a fantastic campground network, so we will be able to shower and do laundry at various campground facilities. This should create a much less stinky car...or so we hope.
Right now, our itinerary is fairly open. Kiley quickly made a map of major places we want to see - volcanoes, geysers, waterfalls, towns known for lobster (priorities!), unusual natural phenomena, and the Northern Lights. Iceland's weather can be a little crazy, and you can experience 4 seasons in just one day. So knowing that, we want to stay very flexible. As long as we can drive the Ring Road (around 840 kilometers) in 2 weeks so we can make it back to Reykjavik in time for our flight home, we're sure to have a blast.
We plan on posting lots of photos while on our journey, so stay tuned!
