Iceland 2014 | Kirkjufell to Blönduós
Kirkjufell & Kirkjufoss
Holy moly, did we have a spectacular start to the day! We got to see the Northern Lights last night (!!!!!). A streak of greenish-yellow kept morphing above us, but it was faint enough that the camera couldn't capture it. Justin was disappointed we couldn't get a photo, but he's studied up on photography tips for catching the Aurora Borealis. Tuesday is our next clear day, so keep hoping!
However, Kirkjufell and Kirkjufoss...Lord have mercy, they are photogenic. I thought I was going to have to drag Justin out of there so we could continue to our next destination. Kirkjufell (fell = hill) is a 463 m (1519 ft) mountain on the north coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. I feel that it's unusual because it's so steep and pointed towards the top. Add in the striations of rock and snow, plus the Kirkjufoss (foss = waterfall), the surrounding mountains, and a beautiful sunrise, and you have the recipe for some incredible pictures. If you ever plan a trip to Iceland, stay in the city Grundarfjörður right next to Kirkjufell (or rent a camper van like us...more info on that later!) so you can wake up to heaven. Kirkjufoss is a waterfall that comes down the mountain opposite Kirkjufell and makes its way to the Atlantic Ocean. But without further ado, please enjoy these photos as much as we enjoyed seeing this and photographing them for you.
